I am unable to digest Dairy products the protein and lactose in them causes a reaction. I am wondering is there any brand available in Ireland I could purchase, as i miss having nice deserts (as i also cannot digest gluten) my favorite being cheesecake, if anyone knows of a good substitute? I can digest Goats milk products etc just not cows milk. also looking for a cream substitute that is not alpro soy
I just would like to add that it is not just the lactose which causes a reaction with me There is lactose free milk etc in ireland and i have the same reaction with them it is something else in the milk also i cannot digest

  1. A few options come to mind. Here in the USA, we have a line of lactose free products that are spy based. The brand to which I refer is called “Tofutti”. I am not sure if you can get that at your local Tesco in Eire. Another thing to try is perhaps looking for the liquid form of the lactase enzyme, which will help to predigest that form of sugar that you cannot. Check to see if your pharmacist (chemist) can get that for you. You would have to mix it with the cream cheese (or milk) and let is sit a while before use. The brand of enzyme I once saw was “Lactaid”.

I have actually tasted cheesecake made with tofu based sour cream and it was a pretty good substitute. I liked it. Check out the links below. Maybe you could find a store that ships to Ireland. Maybe Tesco or Sainsbury (if you are up north) could order it? Finally, you could check Wal-Mart’s UK branch, ASDA. Good luck.

  2. tofutti is what we used, and last I heard, at least some tofutti products are available in the UK

a nice desert that we used to do is the following:
Mix together a fat, like shortening, with flour and chopped pecans, until you have a dough-like texture. Press this into the bottom of a square or rectangular pan and bake it until it’s golden. Let cool.

Mix a LOT non-dairy cream cheese with powdered sugar to desired sweeteness – it’ll get softer than normal cream cheese, as I recall, and the texture isn’t as good, but it’s still doable. Spread this over the crust, make it 1-3 inches thick, depending on how much you want. Top this with blueberry pie filling and then refrigerate and let set overnight. Remove from fridge immediately before eating.

As I recall, the fake cream cheese sometimes didn’t set quite right, but it tasted good this way no matter what. 🙂
