  4. I don’t personally feed raw, but I know some people who do. You have the basic idea, but you also want to make sure he is getting the right portions. Check out http://rawdiettruth.blogspot.com/

  5. One thing that is not looked at for most pet owners is that they do not realize that your dog or cat needs real meat just as they do vegetables. Where or not your dog will eat them raw is a different thing. I would suggest feeding him leftovers vegetables, that have just been steam cooked with no sauce on them cause that is not good for them, in with your raw meat.

I must say it takes a lot to feed your animal raw meat and vegetables because it is the best thing that you can feed your dog. The second best thing is cooked meat and vegetables. Most people do not know that feeding your animal kibble everyday slow kills them cause they are not getting the nutrients they need to live a long healthy life, you are doing a good job.

  6. just like everyone else said, he does need some vegetables and you need to throw in a little bit of oil (olive oil, flaxseed oil, or fish oil, which is really, really good)also to help moisturize his skin, it will help his coat to be shiney, and it also helps him have a smoother bowel movement. i don’t like giving and raw meat, please at least cook it first. they can get sick from raw meat just as well as we could.

  7. I don’t have my dogs on a raw diet but I know people who do and besides the meat they also add rice or oats to help them digest the food better as well as veggies, such as carrots and celery … here is a site that looked good to me as well.

  8. Carrots (try cooked), rice….
I used to feed my pit an egg mixed in with his food once a week or once every other week to keep a shiny coat.

  10. Oh, how wonderful – a commonsense dog owner, for once!! 🙂

You have started your dog on the path to incredible health, don’t let anyone tell you any different! Here is my blanket statement that I throw in for dog food answers:

Dogs can technically live on an omnivorous diet, but any dog that lives wild, whether it is a feral dog or the dog’s cousin, the wolf, will eat meat, fat and bones every chance it gets. A wild dog’s diet is comprised of muscle and organ meats, bones, fat, and they will possibly ingest some fibrous vegetable matter if they eat any stomach or intestine contents, which they usually avoid. Aside from munching grass to help them throw up, dogs do NOT eat vegetables, grains or fruits – and most importantly, their digestive system is an extrememly harsh, short one, which breaks down meat, bone and fat beautifully but doesn’t break down those fibrous vegetables and grains.

If you want to give your dog the best diet possible, either feed him raw muscle and organ meats with raw bones, or at least get him a dry food that is meat-based (check out Eagle Pack, Blue Buffalo, Diamond, Innova, or any of the other great natural and organic foods out there) and supplement this dry food diet with raw bones and fresh (or cooked, if you must) meat and eggs. A healthy dog will have no “doggy” breath, very minimal fecal matter (because his body is using what he’s eating), healthy skin, a shiny coat and eyes, and will not come down with diet-related diseases down the road. Food truly is the best medicine, and is far easier on your wallet than expensive medicines, tonics and surgeries that you’ll buy from your vet to fix the problem after it’s too far gone.

  11. What you are doing is good. I would give some different meat form different animals. Like some beef or lamb. Heart is considered a muscle meat, give some liver or kidney as organ. You can also buy Offal from some stores or a butcher. It is basically ground organs and sometimes glands.
Variety is important for dogs. If you only feed a few meat sources, there can be some nutritional deficiencies. Different meats is good. You can give fish, eggs and some oils to help your dog.

Dogs do not need veggies (although you can give some if you want), and they should not have grains. Meat (and bones and organs) should be the majority of your dogs diet. If you want to give veggies, don’t give more than about 10% of the total diet. You could give some carrot or something as a treat.

Some people use supplements. This can include oils or pills. You don’t have to unless you feel like you need to or there is an issue. A multivitamin can be a good idea. Ask you vet for a recommendation and what it should contain.

As you have a puppy, you need to make sure he is getting the right amount of food. The general rule is 2-3% of the ideal adult weight. For puppies is can be as much as 5-10% of the current weight. If your puppy is growing at a good rate (not too fast or slow) then you are doing good. You should weight your puppy at least once a month and adjust the amount of food accordingly.
Having a vet who supports your choice of diet is a good idea. They can help you with the amount and what to feed.

  12. Raw is the best you can give a dog. As long as he is getting the proper ratio of everything that is. You may want to give he some veggies, but you don’t have to. Carrots are the best. But he might just be better off only meat. Depends on the dog though, and the owner! 🙂
