Is it rude for a grade 3 teacher to use the phrase “it’s none of your business” with students?

Question by Eric: Is it rude for a grade 3 teacher to use the phrase “it’s none of your business” with students?
My son’s grade 3 teacher frequently uses the phrase “it’s none of your business” as a way of telling kids to focus on their own work and leave other students alone. I was raised to never use phrases like this, because they are rude. My son comes home saying his teacher was rude to him today (because that’s what we taught him). Is the teacher setting a good example? Are my wife and I being over sensitive? Is this acceptable language to use with grade 3 students?

  1. Perhaps it is rude: however, sticking one’s nose in someone else’ business is definitely rude.

  2. No it’s not, no kid or teenager should be spoken to like that by any teacher.

  3. It is rude, but sometimes its nesissary to say it if the child is constantly not focusing on work. I remember my grade teachers saying the same things.

  4. Yes. To use it to children is rather rude, as they are much more sensitive towards authoritative figures. I would’ve been upset if I had been told that in 3rd grade. In 9th+ grade, not so much.

  5. Maybe the teacher should be using different words like Mind Your Own Bees Wax or something around that line 🙂

  7. It’s possible that maybe your son is just hearing the words and not the tone; at that age it’s hard for kids to distinguish. If the teacher’s saying “oh come on, get to work it’s none of your business” in a chirpy tone it’s different to “buckle down, it’s none of your business” in a harsh tone. Yet the phrase in itself isn’t rude, and hopefully the teacher doesn’t intend for it to be.

  8. It’s a little rude, but sometimes that’s the only way to get through to kids. Most kids seem to think that everything that is going on with everyone else is their concern. I’ve used it before, but generally I’ll turn it around on them. “Is that your business?” “Is that something you need to concern yourself with?” I usually follow it with, “You worry about you and I’ll worry about everyone else.”
