Sat in the bird hide we were lucky enough to catch a flock of geese coming in to land. We heard them first and had just enough time to raise our cameras. I’m considering cropping these.

Question by LeiLei: Is it okay to raise ducklings in the city?
our backyard is mostly concrete and tiles. we have a swimming pool.. theres not really much grass. we have grass in the frontyard but no fence . does this sound like an okay environment to raise ducklings? theres a duck pond in the park close to our house. should we let our ducklings live there when they grow up?>

  1. Do you want your concrete tiles to get dirty?? You see, as ducks get older, they get extremely messy. They poop a lot, and it’s deadly for a duckling to swim in a swimming pool because the chlorine in the pool can kill them. Young ducklings need warmth, and older ducklings need grass, but at the same time they need protection from predators. I would suggest NO at this time.

  2. I answered your other question about ducklings. Why would you want to keep a duck in such an environment? If you use the swimming pool presumably its chlorinated which is no good for ducks to swim on.

You can’t raise a breed of domestic duck and then release them onto a pond in a park, this is how cross breeding occurs which does the wild duck population harm. Why don’t you just go to the park and appreciate the wild ducks? Much easier.
