Question by efrainperezcamacho: Is it a urban legend that chicken bone would kill a dog that eat it? or it holds some kind of validity?
I have got a few nice answers, but they are somehow contradictory among themselves (Stomach? Throath? maybe?). I’m still do not sure what to think
Feel free to answer in the comment section below
If a Dog eats a chicken bone, it splinters for some reason and tears up the inside of the dogs stomach and then it bleeds and then could really really hurt the dog and I am sure if you did not get medical attention to the dog or kept feeding it chicken bones it could die.

Response to your 2nd part. I have never heard of the throat BUT that does not mean people use stomach as a “general” term… Know what I mean? I think either way, it could hurt your dog. 🙁

It’s no legend, it just that chicken bones are frail and splinter which can get caught in a dog’s throat. It may not happen all the time, my dogs have gotten in to the trash and eaten all our chicken dinner remains several times (bones and all) and were fine. But it’s better not to risk it. If you want to give your dog a bone, big beef bones are the best.

It will kill a dog because the bones are so small your dog can actually choke on them.

Chicken bones can splinter at any point in the dogs’ digestive track- from eating it to pooing it. This can seriously injure your dog, and even lead to his death (internal bleeding).
It may not happen every time, but do you really want to take a chance with your dog? Play it safe and get him some chewable bones at the petstore.

I don’t know if it will kill a pet. possibly a small dog
or cat. I have a lab / pitbull mix and without my knowledge
my 6 yr old daughter gave him the legs and neckbones. He
devoured it and no problems.
What do coyotes and wolves, foxes eat…….chickens, and they live just fine. yes their wild but, same type chemistry as a dog. so, if in doubt….don’t do it.

According to our vet, cooked chicken bones splinter very easily and can choke your pet. Raw chicken bones should be no problem

chicken bones splinter and can lodge in throat or anywhere else it ends up on its way out.

I AGREE W / MOST ALL OF THE ANSWERS HERE….BOTTOM LINE..[THE SAFETY FACTOR]…JUST “DON’T”….GIVE YOUR DOG “BIRD-BONES”…..OR…ANY OTHER BONES THAT HAVE A TENDENCY TO “SHARPLY” SHATTER…..THERE’S ENOUGH THINGS OUT THERE [IN STORES…AND PET SHOPS….AND…THRU YOUR “VET”…SO AS YOU “DON’T” HAVE TOO GIVE YOUR DOG BONES THAT MIGHT INJURE OR EVEN “KILL’ YOUR LOVED PET…AND…FRIEND….

chicken bones can be harmful to your dog if you feed them whole to your dog,but you can try giving them fashionably, like grind them together with the meat so he can eat everything.my dog loves to eat unflavored chicken.we just boil it to cook and we grind it up so my dog can eat it all.it’s just a matter of how to feed your dog.

Any bone that your dog can break apart chewing on it can splinter and cause problems from choking to tearing up there stomach. any bone should be watched. Chicken bones are one of the brittlest bones you can get they-splinter really easy can Evan shatter… I recently had to take away one of those large bones that they have for dogs it is baked in away that supposed to not splinter but she manged to do it. So really need to watch all bones. Chicken bones I wouldn’t give to any animal because of how brittle they are.

Think it’s because chicken bones, unlike most other bones, tend to be very sharp when broken.

its true from what i heard because most bones have splinters once that splinter gets into your dogs stomach the dog will die

Chicken bones are hollow and fragile. If chewed they splinter and yes they can cause internal bleeding. They can cause damage anywhere from the mouth to the anus! It could kill the animal if it punctured its digestive track (bowel etc.) but it happens rarely.Im a VT and have seen only one potentially fatal case 1 time in 12 years.

the chicken bone splinters and cuts the instestines (i believe) which can kill a dog. it’s because of the way the chicken bone is made compared to other bones.

yes, the chicken bone/bones will shatter in their intenstines and they will bleed internally.

Cooked beef bones are bad too. Think twice before giving Fido the bone from your prime rib dinner.

Um it’s actually cooked bones that they shouldn’t eat – no cooked bones ever! They can eat raw chicken necks, but stear clear of the rest of the chicken!

cooked fowel bones of any type are brittle and splinter into sharpe pcs. try it your self. snap a leg bone in half and see how sharpe it is . now imagine trying to swallow it.raw bones are soft and dogs con chew them.

Chicken bones can splinter into sharp spears of bone, and can perforate the digestive tract, throat, bowel, or mouth of your dog. Please do not take chances.

Bones from cooked chicken are brittle and splinter when dogs chew them, and could cause serious damage to their stomach or intestines, which could lead to death. Raw chicken bones are more elastic, but should probably be avoided as well. No urban legend here, just common sense.

the bones can get caught in the throat and cause damage and choking so it is best not to take a chance of the pain and losing you pet a member of the family.

No its not an urban legend, its just your dog might choke on it if you give it to him. So dont, just to make sure, unless you want to kill your dog.

Yes. Chicken bones are soft and can splinter. The sharp edges could make holes in the dog’s digestive tract which would lead to internal bleeding or paratenidous (an infection from fecal material) and die.

It is true, chicken bones splinter when they are chewed so there is always danger of causing internel bleeding.

Bones can splinter or develop dangerous sharp edges which dogs easily swallow or choke on. Vets often tell of surgical nightmares involving bits of splintered bone, because in addition to the danger of choking, the sharp pieces can damage the intestinal tract. So in answer to your question, yes, it holds some kind of validity.

I feed my dog a raw diet called BARF. In the food it has chicken bones. She has never had a problem. Pork bones are like human bones that they splinter.

I think it has something to do with chocking. My dog died doing this. Chicken bones splinter and cut up the esophagus and make it difficult to dislodge.

any kind of bone that you eat the meat off of such as the chicken bone can splinter off and cut up every thing like the throught and the stomach every thing it is true it can kill them! you should only give them the bones they make for dogs.
