Question by Iwanabeaderbygirl:D: Is goat milk good for puppies?
I have a Chihuahua and he was the runt of the litter and my vet said to fatten him up a little well someone told me goats milk will do it. Is it good for him and how should I give it to him?? Thanks
He’s on the skinny side and my vet said to feed him dog biscuits… But I would rather not and give him something good for him.

No. He’ll fatten up as he grows. He’s to only drink water now. And eat a healthy diet.

Milk can be hard on a puppy’s stomach, he will fatten, if he is really skinny ask your vet about using a special diet, use just water for now.

Here! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080529123630AAFzvi8 I read it and it said the doc said to drink it and it was good. Maybe you should give him a few dog biscuits once in a while. don’t worry, he will turn out fine! i always feed them to my dog. of course, I love dogs and know piles about them!

If he’s still more of a puppy you can fix him Puppy formula and mix it with dry kibble. The kibble softens up and most puppies are taught to eat puppy chow like this.
It does help.
Also: just water and some food is all he needs.
Remember if you live in a colder climate to get him a sweater! 😛 Most small dogs do not like them BUT it does help them.

If he is fully weaned he does not need goats milk. Increase the portions of kibble you are currently giving or add an extra meal.

No. You don’t want to give him anything that will cause him to eat less and substitute nutrient rich calories for relatively empty ones. Likewise with fattening him up with cookies. What he needs is high quality puppy food, grain free so every bite packs a punch. I have and have had my share of undereaters, and I’d rather have them on a healthy diet than just put fat on them so they look healthy

Goat milk is fine for dogs – it does not contain lactose, which is the problem with giving them cow’s milk. If your vet has recommended it, then go for it! It alone is not a sufficient diet for a dog that is any older than a puppy, but it can be given to a dog to drink or their regular kibble can be soaked in it before feeding. My only concern is that dairy products go bad a lot faster than other foods – so make sure to wash his dish out after every meal and only leave food down for 10-20 minutes at a time (a good idea anyway).

Yes, give him something good for him. Modern dog foods are carefully formulated to be the complete and balanced diet dogs need. So forget the goats’ milk and any other junk. Many be in the 50’s dogs need this or that added.
