Putting together the vegetable raised bed garden. Dug it out, put down weed block,. using cement blocks for the walls.

Question by tim is cool: is a raised bed garden safe from gophers?
my backyard has lots of gophers and i don’t want to kill them with poison etc. so maybe if i just built a raised bed like 2-3 ft. with bricks then would the gophers not dig up to them? would work?

  1. I’m pretty sure you would have to brick along the bottom which would be bad for drainage so I have no idea =( Maybe use pots?

  2. ..It takes a lot more than that to discourage a gopher–Perhaps an underlining of aluminum wire fence?

  4. I put 1/2” box wire down before I built my raised beds. Ortho make a produce that you spread on your yard that is suppose to drive gophers away

  5. Places like Lowes and Home Depot have different kinds of Critter Ridders. This spread out in the yard will make them leave.

Some kind of metal fencing under and around the garden should keep the little critters out if the garden. There are different kinds and different prices.

  6. Line the bottom of your raised beds with hardware cloth or chicken wire.

  7. I build a raised bed in my garden and the gophers figured out where the tasty roots and plants were. I had to transplant the few tomato plants left. I’m pretty sure all their tunnels are within the box cause they were coming back every other day. I’m moving the raised bed and placing tough wire at the bottom.

  8. 1\2 inch mesh galvanized wire fence stuff underneath and is good idea to use 1\4 inch wide 1 inch long stables to pin the galv mesh to the wood if possible or burry edge in some concrete so those lil bastards don’t sneak a carrot.
