www.ecofilms.com.au Intensive aquaculture fish farming with a hydroponics component at Green Sky Growers in Florida. Here tilapia are grown using high protein fish food and liquid oxygen to grow 1 lb of fish per 1 gallon of water. Please don’t try this at home as one small failure will destroy your entire output of fish. Read our blog for further information at ecofilms.com.au

I would like to get one of those drum filters – would it be possible to to let me know who the manufacturer is?

Might be a good idea to amend the title of this video. The oxygen is stored in liquid form, but not introduced to the water that state. If introduced in liquid form, all you’d have is bubbly ice and dead fish.
To offer a parallel – I was in hospital once and I was given oxygen. The hospital receives and stores the oxygen in liquid form, but it is allowed to warm and expand before being breathed in. If it wasn’t, I’d be dead and unable to annoy you with this comment.

Not enough oxygen? Dealt with by oxygenating with liquid oxygen. Too much nitrogen? aquaponics filter it out providing nutrients to the plants. Trust me if the fish were suffering 1 lbs of fish per gallon could not be sustained.

industrialized aquaponics. what used to be a sustainable endeavor now becomes unsustainable.

you said the roots were used for something what do they use it for?

what do they use the roots for?? I had that idea yesterday, my idea was to dry out the roots and use the roots to make fibers to make clothes, and ropes, what are they using the roots for?? :-O yeah it is all just a circulating system that people need to utilise more these days, but the bigger the project the more thay have to take care of, the system I could imagine could easily clog up, if you are too lazy..

Impressive system…but I would estimate that set up cost at least 2.5 mil. if not more.

Thats is an impressive system. I’ve heard about it, now I need to come out there to see it for myself. Great job.

Yes, it is a commercial set up and my original comment was made about that, and it reminds me of over packed chicken pens, where the chickens don’t get to walk or run or have any kind of activity. They are just fed to grow AFAP and go on the table.
THis is an excellent video with insight into a lot of finer points of doing AP though

This is a commercial production facility which has to compete with “conventional” methods.. They are as organic as u can get using the latest technology. Now if u wanted to do this at home I doubt u would need an O2 injector or mircofilter..

They purge the fish to cleanse internal toxins. It’s just like if you went on a fast for a few days, it would flush out your liver, kidneys, bowels, and some excess fat. It makes it so the fish is at its healthiest just before it is harvested. They only do this with high intensity farms because with lower fish density, the fish are less exposed to other fish wastes.

I would want to know a lot more about what’s in the feed and why the purge before I would eat it. I live in an area with a lot of salmon farms and trust me farmed salmon is not fit for human consumption.

GREAT question interviewer about why do you purge them

it would be VERY cool if someone posted a response to this video or if flashtoons did a video showing how the feeder can be made, i love the belt and timer concept, seems very simple and basic and the more simple and more basic, the ebtter

in a way i do agree with you, even though it works, i dont like the idea of so many fish crammed together
its too similar to cage farming and what we are doing now in current meat production
i like this because it shows we can do it if we need to if times get tough for short periods, but we shouldnt strive for each commercial setup to get 1lb/gallon, i like the idea of them having more range and freedom to move
in my opinion that equals a healthier and/or safer product

great point about not trying to achieve such high outputs at home
im sure it takes several redundancies to prepare for a possible failure and be ready for it
however that shouldnt discourage viewers from trying aqauponics, just dont attempt to achieve 1 lb per gallon
