Question by Eric G: Info on starting a small business?
I want to start doing the homework on starting running a small business and was wondering if you could reccomend any books or web pages or give any advice of your own, I’ve been thinking alot about having a honey bee farm or possibly a small bakery shop. Thanks.

  1. Aweee a honey bee farm how cute!

These are the first things I did, I went to my local small business development center and took classes. You will need to learn how to make a business plan for a loan, you will need to know quick books or some sort of accounting program, you will need to know how much you will want to borrow, and a good credit report of course. You will also need to find out vendors and how much it will cost to run this business, etc.. I will paste a link to my local office and it will help answer a lot of your questions and help direct you Good luck

things to google in your area, SBA and SBDC A lot of their classes are free and they have a few you need to pay for but once you take the classes you will have your own personal business counselor to help you step by step through your process.

and and there are so many books at borders books and barnes and nobel… I personally like to take some time when I go there, grab a drink, so to the entrepreneur / business section and go through the books I think are easy for me to understand

  2. Starting a small business requires determination, motivation, and know-how. Choosing what kind of business to start can be an immobilizing task when confronted with the multitude of opportunities. It’s important to determine where your passions lie and to understand your personality type. For any start-ups, a business plan allows you to gain a better understanding of your industry structure, competitive landscape, and the capital requirements of starting a small business.

  3. starting a bakery shouldnt be a big deal .what is required are few culinary skilss which one can master at any culinary school . with knowledge of recipes machinery and packaging one should able to start bakery business in short period say 4-6 months . Get your finances from friends relative and loans from bank and select a place to start with . You can even start with your home catering to small client base and with word to mouth advertisement you can gradually expand for a bigger bakery. check out popular local bakery product and the competition in the neighborhood before launching your bakery .

  4. Hi Eric,
Both of your ideas sound interesting. Have you done any research on current offerings by potential competitors or demand from potential customers? Is there any way you could start small to test your ideas, such as with a part-time business?

We post a number of articles around starting a business on the Intuit Small Business Blog, including recent posts on finding an idea and raising money as well as posts on turning a hobby into a business and working on your business the side (in addition to your day job).

  5. Look into Guerilla Marketing by Levinson. I see staritng a business as having 3 main phases: concept, supply chain, marketing.

Supply Chain is about putting together the manufacturing process and all the sytems required for taking the product from manufacturing to the customer.

I found marketing being the ost difficult thing.
