Question by Candy: if pisca vegetarian do you still have dairy and eggs?
I understand vegan and I understand that lacto means dairy and ovo means eggs but is there a title if you do all 3 sometimes. We tell people we are vegetarians that will have eggs once a week and maybe goat cheese on a salad and fish a couple times a week. Are we Pisca vegetarians? Got into a friendly discussion with a friend about this and she was all about giving us a hard time saying we were not vegetarians. My husband and I are doing this for health reasons. Basically, we do not eat meats of any kind.

  1. The term you’re looking for is “pescatarian” and yes, most of them consume both eggs and dairy products. It is not a form of vegetarianism, however, since vegetarians do not eat animals, including fish.

  3. Hi, the term “pescatarian” is used to describe someone who eats dairy, eggs and fish but no other meat.

If it was just eggs and dairy then this would be a “lacto-ovo vegetarian,” although this is usually just shortened to “vegetarian” since this is what most vegetarians are.

Technically your friend is correct, as a vegetarian doesn’t eat any meat including fish. Pescatarians can eat fish, eggs and dairy though so that fits you perfectly.

  4. You probably mean pescatarian. Pescatarianism is a meat limiting diet where someone eats only fish and no other meat. The rest of their diet is vegetarian, yet they shouldn’t be confused with vegetarians. Your NOT vegetarians. She is right. You do eat meat. Fish is meat.

  5. If you eat fish you aren’t a vegetarian or any form of -etarian. Basically you do eat meat, because fish is meat and is also very unhealthy for you but more importantly they are not yours to eat or use for any reason. A vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat or any slaughter by-products and can go all the way up too someone who doesn’t eat any animal products whatsoever.

Here is a handy little chart (feel free to copy and use it just don’t alter it):
    Pescetarian-a vegetarian fish
    Pollotarian- a vegetarian chicken
Flexitarian- a flexible vegetarian (a dancer or maybe a gymnast who is also vegetarian)
Semi-Vegetarian – a crash between a semi trailer truck and a vegetarian. Not a very pretty site. Vegetarians need to watch out when crossing the street or driving.
Lacto-ovo- eats dairy and eggs (no meat or slaughter by products)
Lacto- eats dairy (no meat or slaughter by products)
Ovo- eats eggs (no meat or slaughter by products)
Strict/Pure Veg (often mis-refered to as veganism)- eats no animal products or by products whatsoever
Raw- eats from 80-100% raw vegetables and fruits, nuts, grain and legume sprouts, seeds, plant oils, sea vegetables, herbs, and fresh juices as in heated to no more than 118 degrees (basically a strict/pure veg diet just made raw)
    ———
Vegan- a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude — as far as is possible and practical — all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, including humans and the environment.
In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.”

As Issac Bashevis Singer said: “I didn’t become vegetarian for my health I did for the health of the chickens” (however you can and should substitute chickens for all animals)
