Question by Sema R: I was born&raised in Turkey but live in US. How can I give power of attorney to my brother who is in Turkey?
I am Turkish by birth, and lived in Turkey till my marriage to an American citizen in 68. My father passed away in 1988, left some property to be equally divided between my sister, mother, brother and myself. My brother is experiencing though times, and I want him to benefit from my share of the inheritance. How can send a power of attorney to him? Can anyone help me?

  1. Oh gosh – I don’t think you want to give him Power of Attorney – that would mean HE would make all YOUR life decisions!! You wouldn’t be able to do much in life – legally speaking – without his consent. You wouldn’t even be able to buy or sell a home without him having to get involved!!

If you want to share part of your inheritance, just send him part of it!!

  2. This is a legal matter that must be handled in Turkey under Turkish law. Have your brother investigate what needs to happen. He can then have documents sent to you for your signature, which will no doubt need to be notarized. You cannot resolve the issue in the U.S. with local attorneys. so have your brother initiate the process and keep you informed.
