It could be many things. If you just saw the one, it could be a tourist, i.e. a bug that just crawled in from somewhere else and decided to have a little vacation.
More likely its a bedbug. Its normal to have bedbugs in your mattress and its not a big problem unless it totally grosses you out or your son has an allergy. You can get a powder treatment from you pharmacy, but these are pretty harsh, not very effective and worse for your son’s health than the original problem, so unless its a major infestation I wouldn’t bother, and even then I would prefer to replace the mattress.
It could also be a silverfish (more commonly found in bathrooms). These are also harmless to humans, although they may feed on the fabric of the bedding. They prefer conditions in bathrooms.
House centipedes often come indoors at this time of year, looking for winter accommodation. Some of these are venomous, but the very worst bite is less severe than a bee sting. They are usually found in basements and prefer moist damp conditions, so should not stay very long in your son’s bedroom provided it is not damp.
My final suggestion is that it could be a moth larva. These cause the most damage of any, as they feed pretty vigorously on clothing and fabric.
The best way to get rid of most of these is to make sure you’re son’s bedroom is free of all clutter, put mothballs in his wardrobe and any drawer storage, and put his toys, etc into containers when they are not in use. Eliminate any areas of damp and vacuum at least once a week to get rid of dust which some insects may feed on. Some garden centres supply live earwigs or other beneficial insects which can help to reduce the insect population outside your house, which will help with the interior problem.
If in any doubt and you think there may be a health risk, contact an exterminator service for advice.
