Question by Diana O: I do have a 34 lb bird, It barely fits in my rival roaster, is it safe to cook stuffed in a roaster?
Got the bird from some kids raising 4H turkeys. Just not sure how to cook the HUGE thing safely. If it is stuffed tightly into a roaster will it cook properly? I can’t find a pan big enough for the bird either.
Help.

  1. It is unsafe to stuff a bird tightly into a roaster. You may want to use an oven or even cut your turkey in half before you cook it.

  2. I suggest cutting it in half and making two different kinds of turkey.

  3. At first I saw “cooked stuffed” as “cooked with stuffing in it.” It’s safer to cook an unstuffed bird, and probably tastier as well. When you cook a stuffed bird, the stuffing in the very center of the bird has to reach 165F to be safe, and by that point, the outermost part of the bird is overcooked and often dry.
Then I realized that it was “stuffed in a roaster.” I’d be concerned about the air and heat circulating properly if you have to stuff it in your roaster.
