A beehive is an enclosed structure in which some honey bee species of the genus live and raise their young. Natural beehives (typically referred to simply as "nests") are naturally occurring structures occupied by honey bee colonies, while domesticated honey bees live in man-made beehives, often in an apiary. These man-made structures are typically referred to as "beehives". Only species of the subgenus Apis live in hives, but only the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) and the eastern honey bee (Apis cerana) are domesticated by humans.
The beehive’s internal structure is a densely packed matrix of hexagonal cells made of beeswax, called a honeycomb. The bees use the cells to store food (honey and pollen), and to house the "brood" (eggs, larvae, and pupae).
Question by T-Rex Mermaid: I am looking for beekeepers, anyone out there?
I need to learn about the risks and fun of raising bees. This would be my service project for nature. I have a one + acre lakefront backyard and there are lots of farms in my community. (Not my neighborhood.)
What are the pros and cons of raising bees? Is this an enjoyable project? Please refer me to Beekeeping Sites. Have a bee-utiful day!

Your local Council may want you to have a permit for keeping bees especially if there are neighbours in close proximity. You might want to consider checking with your doctor to see if you have an allergic reaction to bee stings as it is quite common for a bee keeper to get stung.
If there are no pollen producing plants within 2 km you may have to provide your own plants to enable those bees to collect pollen. Different types of flowers affect the taste and quality of honey that is produced by the bees. You should also consider whether you intend on selling the honey.
My local beekeeper, who has several bee boxes in his front yard (and I live near the inner city area) was recently warned about keeping too many bees as neighbours were complaining about unwanted swarms.
He sells honey for about $ 10 a kg. If you intend on selling, you may need a sole proprietor small business registration especially if you are considering claiming anything off your tax.

buy a book and read up. the main thing you need to think of is flowers. you need constant sources for flowers or the bees will move to where there is one. sometimes people will move the hive when there are none around the original location. It depends on how far the will have to travel.
