Hydroponics growing system: How to build a DIY Aeroponics growing system using a 5 Gallon Bucket. There are many forms of hydroponics growing systems out there. This video will show you step by step how to build an aeroponics growing system. Aeroponics is a system where the roots are suspended in an environment saturated with fine drops, mist or fog of a nutrient solution. The method entails periodically wetting the roots of the growing plants with a fine mist of nutrients. The growing plants with their roots suspended in a deep air or growth chamber receive excellent aeration and a moist environment. This is the main advantage of aeroponics. Another distinct advantage of aeroponics over other hydroponics growing systems is that any species of plant can be grown. In an aeroponic system the micro environment can be finely controlled. This addresses many of the limitations of other hydroponics growing systems. In other hydroponics growing systems certain species of plants can survive before they become waterlogged. This means that you can grow plants longer and faster, because aeroponics is that suspended aeroponic plants receive 100% of the available oxygen and carbon dioxide to the roots zone. This will accelerate biomass growth and reduce rooting times. Aeroponic techniques have been proven to be commercially viable for propagation, seed germination, seed potato production, tomato production, leaf crops, and micro-greens. The success of aeroponics has even recognized by

  1. I don’t consider this aeroponics. It is just splashing water inside the net instead of dripping it. To be aeroponics you need a fine mist, and thus a much more powerful pump. A fogger tip will do the trick. I am working on a way to use a small fan to get the micron droplets, semi fog.

    • and the roots grow down to the liquid and you loose most of the advantages to growing in the air. Just switch to bubbleponics when it gets to that point.

  2. So what if you want to grow 6 plants, I have to buy 6 Pumps?

  3. that s not aeroponics its more of a sparkling type of thing , if i’m correct for aeroponics you need a very strong pump in order to create some kind of mist that passes like a breeze thru the roots

  5. Thanks for the comment, I have had good results with this system as shown on my blog. Perhaps there is some confusion on the operation of the pump. If you run the pump 24/7 then you would add a great deal of heat to the system, however if you only run the pump for per determined times say 15 min per hour the there seem to be no significant heat build up.

  6. Thanks for the comment, There is a filter built into the pump that keeps the roots out. Perhaps it depends on the plants root system. My 4 foot tomatoes did quite well for me. you can see the results on my blog.

  7. Lol dumbass Ur pump is going to suck up the roots and get clogged / my plants 2 ft and the roots are all the way to the bottom of the 5 gl bucket

  8. If its not broken don’t fix it…bubbler is what you need here not 1 360 degree spray head, but 2 180 degree heads off the lid to hybridize a dwc. The biggest problem though is your submersible pump. It will heat up the water and fry the roots. Im sorry to have to say this but you need to completely revamp your “improvement”, your going to guide people into plant death. Sorry man, good luck…Dr Phil

  9. Air flow would not be that big of a deal for one plant. I you do what to move the air around some, I just use a desk fan to ad a light breeze

  10. Cool let me know how it goes I have not been able to fruit with Fluorescents in the past. That said, I have always had multiple plants at one time. I have had some success with LED but nothing like good old HPS. I will be interested in your results.

  11. Thanks so much. I was actually thinking a 2-lamp 4ft fluorescent with some 6400k’s would do a good job as well. I actually met the General Hydroponics guys at Electric Forest (music festival) and snagged a GO box for 10 bucks, so Im good on nutrients. Will making sure I have good air flow be a big factor as well since I am going to do this in my bedroom (2 windows on one wall) or my basement?

  12. Thanks for the question. You could I my experience you will need HPS for fruiting plants. 120 watt HPS should do it. You will also need some hydroponics nutrient.

  14. Thanks for the comment. The best part of hydroponics is that you do not need to re-pot. this system is the plants home for life. Your assumption is correct. just start the seedling in a rockwool cube and then transfer to the main system. You can also start in dirt then rinse off the roots and plant in to the system. You fill the net pot with a medium like hydroton and that keeps your plant in place. the roots will then grow out in to the bucket below.

  15. My one concern with having a lid that fits one bucket is repotting. I have never grown hydro, but I know in soil there is a lot of repotting involved as the plants, and more specifically the roots, grow. Do you just start the seed and put the seedling into the basket with some kind of medium and just let it grow into it and thats it until it dies?

  24. One problem here is that the roots need oxygen. The spay head will definitely oxygenate the water, but what happens after the roots use up all the oxygen in the bucket. A simple way is to add an air stone. Once you add the air stone, you don’t need the pump and can just do a DWC.

I do a pump with multiple small spray heads in an air-clone system with a single air stone, works great. Doesn’t work great if no air stone.

    Once cloned, DWC.
