How to make a Top Drip Bucket Hydroponic System

HydroponicsFriend.com This video contains instructions for building your own Top Drip Bucket Hydroponic System using a 5 Gallon Bucket, a Mesh Pot Bucket Lid, and the GH Farm Kit. This kit was intended to be used for the General Hydroponics Water Farm System. I knew with a little modification I could build my own system and save a few dollars. The Pumping Column is an “Air Lift Pump”. It uses air bubbles instead of an electric water pump to supply the hydroponic nutrient to the plant. I recommend you buy the 10″ lid. As you see in the video the 8″ will work also with a very easy modification. I’m using this system to have my own home grown heirloom tomatoes. The links I promised are posted on my website here. http “Protofunk by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons “Attribution 3.0” creativecommons.org

  2. Hey what if you used and electric air pump for an air mattress? That would maximize crop yeilds, plus not to mention how much water pressure you could achieve. Imagine what you could do with it. i have done a small scale test and it works like a dream. Please try it, your video gave me the idea.

  3. Hate to break it to you RE-RE…the “pumping column support shaft” as you call it, is actually the light blocker for the water level…

  5. There is a pump pumping air into the bottom of the bucket, into the “pumping column support tube” which he shows at 4:21. The air bubbles float from the bottom up, into the “pumping column”, which is basically another tube. As the air bubbles go UP, they take the water with them, pushing the water up.

I would guess that you can do an experiment to get the same effect by putting a straw into a water-filled garden hose and blowing into the straw strongly (the effect is not the same, but similar)

  10. thanks for the video. is the air going into the support column or into the bucket? i was thinking if it is going into the bucket and the pressure brings the water up, then maybe i can hook that air tube to an airstone and use it to aerate the water as well. cant do that though if it has to go into the support column.

  11. It’s ok for it to touch the bottom because the tube is cut at an angle. I only shortened it because the drip ring was splashing so much solution on the lid. That would be less of a problem if you used a larger net pot lid. Trim off an inch or so and see how you like it. Trim more if you think it’s necessary. This is will be your system, modify it as you see fit.

  16. gently shake off as much soil as possible. then gently wash the roots. wash your hydroton in a strainer to get all loose media and dust off. then take washed hydroton and put to within 3-4 inches of top of hydro pot. spread roots in all directions. gently place more washed hydroton over roots and you are ready to grow. with hydro slowly introduce nutrients to new plants bringing them up to a normal dosage. gradually adding more each week to you are at the full strength

  19. I use a 3 part hydroponic solution from General Hydroponics with reverse osmosis water in this video. There is only a few teaspoons of the fertilizer so it just barely tints the water. Since your plants are grown without soil it has to get all it’s nutrients from the water and hydroponic fertilizer mix. I’ve tried many brands and they all seen to work well.
