How to Grow Carrots/ The Inverted Raised Bed

I wanted my soil to be lump-free this season because carrots hate lumps. I could have put lump free soil in a raised bed, but I really didn’t want to have to…

  1. I did it over a course of 3 days, but in actuality, I only spent an hour a
day. The heat here is unbearable right now, I took my time.

  2. Take a look at my efforts to grow the perfect carrots. A tad
obsessive-compulsive? Maybe, but it just might work. We’ll find out in 100
    days.

  3. Any updates on those carrots Paula? I’ve got mine planted in the only deep
container available that I had which was a jumbo rectangular bucket of
powdered clothes soap that I’d saved and cleaned out thoroughly. I poked
all kinds of holes in the sides and bottom for good drainage and filled it
with fine peat and compost and a little miracle gro container potting soil
I had left. Like an idiot, I threw tons of seeds on the top and covered
with just a super fine soil. WELLLLLL, it all sprouted and looks insane
now! They’re still babies and only about 2-3 weeks old yet, so I haven’t
really thinned yet. Am tempted just to let them go and see what happens,
they’ll only be used for soups and stews anyhow, so it doesn’t really
matter how long or stubby they are. I’ve got a ton of more seeds, it was
    just the scarlet nantes variety.
Anyhow, I’d love to see how yours are doing in that ditch you fixed up for
    them!

  4. A lot of work Paula but I’m expecting to see some perfect carrots. I got
too much compost in with mine a few years ago and grew some really weird
    looking carrots.

  7. Hi Paula,
Have you ever heard of “Double Digging”? Some years ago I switched to that
method and WOW with the garden. So every year before planting, we double
dig. It’s a lot of work, but makes much less work in the garden when
everything comes up. As well, everything Thrives.

  8. I grew those this year they are red skinned but inside they are orange just
like other carrots. They are pretty good. Hope you have a great harvest.

  9. Paula, I think you’ve got the right formula there! I’ve never been a great
carrot grower either, I just don’t take the time to loosen the soil the
way it probably should be. Whew – the heat there, how do you stand to be
outside? Good luck with your carrots!

  10. Pffft I heard all the same rhetoric about carrots. I grew some a foot long
and thick as a baby’s wrist one year with deep, rich compost soil. I found
that loose rich soil is the perfect medium. Fingers crossed for your
    success! :)

  14. Paula: When a carrot hits anything it stops growing into a long carrot. You
should see a lot better success removing things they can hit. Bernard

  15. They should do great for you, Paula! Between the lycopene in the carrots,
and with all the tomatoes, we should be cancer free ; )

  16. If anyone ever deserved perfect carrots you certainly do. It will be
interesting to see how your experiment works out. I have managed to grow
carrots for the first time in 5 years…well, it’s really since I boasted
about how easy it is to grow carrots.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

  21. Hope you get a nice and long crop there, Paula! 🙂
Wished I liked carrots more than I do. I think I eat about one single
carrot per year. 🙂 It must be raw, can`t stand boiled carrots.

    All the best,
    Halvor.

  22. May all your carrots grow straight…may they never turn, twist, tie, or
get freaky…may they be sweet to you. with na’ry a bitter tone or rough
demeanor. May ALL your carrots be as beautiful as you dream them to be!

  24. Paula, you are going to have FANTASTIC carrots, no doubt about it. I just
planted my second planting of carrots. I, too, hope for long unforked
carrots. My soil is getting better (fluffier) since doing the LASAGNA
METHOD of gardening. I did add more peat moss and perlite. I naturally
have sandy soil, so I didn’t have to add sand. I look forward to your
    update. :0)
