  1. You don’t really need to attend a “school” – this is a casual type home business. You can purchase equipment from various outlets and google info about this type of cottage industry. It wouldn’t hurt to hunt out local beekeepers – they will gladly share their expertise – As long as you set up your bee hives at least 50 miles from them. Just google: beekeeping – bee hives – beekeepers! Its all there!

  3. Hard Knocks and disappointment. You need to start out with at lest one hive. You’ve got a brood box with a floor and this is where the queen stays and lays her eggs. The brooder box is where all the bees live. It should be a large super. Then there is the queen excluder and atop of this I would use a shallow super. You can add as your hive grows. Bee keeping is one of the most important jobs there is. Its not easy but its fun. Once you get started you usually can pick up hives about anywhere. I got this one hive from a outhouse in this park, I’ve smoked them out of chimneys that haven’t been used in a long time. I have even caught bees swarming. One trick about keeping your hive off the ground is pour used motor oil around it to keep the ants out. The Italian bees to me are the best kind, along with the European. There is noting casual about raising bees, especially large scale. Go to the two sites I’ve listed they can get you started. Who knows maybe you’ll get big enough to ship truck loads of bees to California or Florida to pollinate their crops. You get to know your bees and they you, then you don’t have to smoke or suit up to gather your honey. Good luck.
