if you dont want to go spend the big bucks to have a company to do it there is lots of web-sites out there that give you the blue prints on how to build them yourself. all the items can be purchased from homedepot http://www.earths-renewable-energy.com/
your right it is tough but you only have to do it once
but the benefits are well worth the money you will save

Solar water heating makes sense over a broad area, and in fact, in warmer locations, people are migrating to it.
Solar electricity makes financial sense over a more limited area, and this is largely through government incentives. Realistically, it takes years to pay back, and costs thousands of dollars, possibly tens of thousands. Be very careful of scam sites that suggest you can build your own panels and power your house with them for $ 200 or less.
Technology is advancing on its own. If you wait, prices will come down.

93.9% of the energy that is consumed by US is NOT from renewable sources. The best choices when it comes to home power are solar and wind power. These count for only 0.2% of the energy that is consumed.
You can not only save money on your electric bill but you may entirely get rid of it. And if you generate more power than you use then the power company will pay you for the extra electricity. It’s a win-win situation. You can make your own solar and wind power for less than $ 200.00

you need four main components to made the own solar power for home.. They are solar panels, batteries, charge controller, inverter.. solar panels which can be quite expensive if purchased retail and the best way to save some cash is to build them yourself. Source out a good guide and follow it correctly and you shouldn’t have a problem.quite expensive if purchased retail and the best way to save some cash is to build them yourself. Source out a good guide and follow it correctly and you shouldn’t have a problem. These moderate the amount of power transferred from the solar panels to the battery. They also help in keeping the batteries from over charging and trickle charge them to help maintain a long life. When your energy is stored in your deep cycle batteries off your home built solar power system, it is stored as Direct Current (DC). In order to be able to use it for household appliances the power must be converted to Alternating Current (AC). That is the job of a power inverter.

If I were you, I would take other measures in between if you want to maximize the energy. For example, you should replace all your incandescent bulbs with florescents. Caulking around your windows and doors will help. Another thing is a green switch that cuts the juice to all appliances but the refrigerator. If you really want to do something big, I recommend looking into solar water heating. That will make your energy bill go down tremendously.
