Question by Maddie: How to convince my mom to let me get a goat! Help!?
I live in the country. We have 16 acres and I am a very responsible 13 year old. I already have a rabbit and I take good care of him. I get straight A’s and almost never get in trouble. I have been doing research and I heard that goats make good pets ( not indoors) so I’ve been begging if I can get a goat. I have already proved that I am responsible and we can afford it so please tell me a way I can really prove to her that I’m up to it! And don’t try to make me change my mind cause I wont! Thanks !
Can you help? Leave your own answer in the comments!
Goats can be useful for eating weeds. Do you have a shelter to keep one in? I have heard the males can be smelly, so go for a female. If she has a baby, you can sell the baby and also have milk to make yogurt or cheese out of. Also, offer to pay for the goat (and its food) yourself – that would probably help!

Try showing her that you are able to take care of your self first. Make your bed, straighten up , wash you clothes …do the dishes and take the trash out maybe she will consider getting you a goat. Ever think about getting a puppy?

I was 13 when I got my first goats – I still love them to pieces. Getting goats was definitely the best decision I’ve ever made.
I convinced my parents to get goats by basically doing two things:
1) I did a bunch of research about the different breeds of goats and the care that they require. I wrote several different essay-type information sheets about the breeds that I wanted and what the goats would need (hoof-care, food, shelter, etc.). I also explained the reasons why I choose the breeds that I did (my top choice were Nigerian Dwarf goats, and I ended up getting them, but I also listed other breeds that I liked).
2) I joined Dairy Goat 4H, and I was a member for about a year before I got my first goats. I sponsored my 4H leader’s goat and had to go to her house to take care of it a couple of times a month, and I showed her goat in the fair. By joining 4H and sticking with it, I showed my parents that I was truly committed to getting goats.
Definitely get some hands-on experience before you get goats – either join 4H or see if you could volunteer at a local goat farm. Good luck! 🙂
