Question by Maya V: How should I start my vegetable garden?
My little brother decided that he wanted to start a vegetable garden and that I should help. The problem is that neither of us really know where to begin. Any suggestions? We live in South Texas.
Feel free to answer in the comment section below
Well, if you want a good vege garden, there is some work involved.
I always found the best way, was to get four 6″ boards, and place them on edge around the perimeter of the proposed area. Drive some pegs into the ground behind the boards, so the boards will not move.
Ok….so now you have a square or rectangle of boards on the ground.
Next, place a quarter of an inch thick layer of newspaper on the ground, this will stop weeds coming through, and it also helps retain water. Then, get some good garden soil, and fill the vege garden up to the top of the boards, rake it level, then plant your seeds…….water well.
What you will have then is what they call a raised garden, they are easy to maintain, and will grow good veges.

Read some about ‘square foot gardening’.
It’s a technique to start a very easy, productive vegetable garden.
Google for it, you can find the basic principles online.
You can start small, and it easily scales up as big as you like it.

1. Dig holes.
2. Put plants or seeds in holes.
3. put dirt back in hole.
4. Water the dirt in the hole.
5. Pull out weeds as they sprout.
6. Pick the vegetables as they ripen.
7. Place the vegetables into mouth.
8. Enjoy!!

You can probably already plant just about anything. Double-check with an almanac to see what the planting dates are for your area for different types of seeds. If your little brother is very young, start with things that will sprout quickly, like radishes, so he doesn’t lose interest. Also mix in plenty of flowers, even sunflowers, so there will be plenty of color. To keep him occupied early, you might also want to include some flower and tomato plants, not just seeds, so he can see immediate results. Be sure to use Miracle Gro, and especially Miracle Gro for Tomatoes. Both of them give a really healthy start to the plants. When you plant tomato plants, plant them all the way to the first leaf joint–all those little hairs on the stem will turn into roots and give it a stronger root system (just tomatoes on this, though). You might also want to plant some seeds in one-foot squares. Have your garden 4′ across and as long as you like, then divide it into sections. You can plant a square of 16 radishes or carrots, 9 beets or turnips, etc., based on size. Then it’s not so overwhelming, and once you’ve harvested a whole section, you can replant that section however you want. Good luck!
