Question by jdogcool: How much grit do I need to feed my chickens?
I heard to feed my chickens grit every month, but how much? Also, is it necessary? And what about the oyster shells? How much and how often do I feed my chickens that? Is that necessary? Thanks, Jake.

  1. Every month may not be enough and yes it is necessary for the gizzard to grind the food. Oyster shell is good and should be available 24/7 if you get eggs. Give oyster shell in a separate feeder and they will take what they need. A long time ago, when I was not so knowledgeable about chickens, I had one die but it’s crop was full. As the gizzard empties the crop will pass more food to it. I opened it up to investigate and found that that gizzard was also stuffed full but I could find no grits. They were caged in my barn and didn’t get out to find grits on their own. With no grits to grind the food it was too big to leave the gizzard to nourish the bird.
