Question by : How much corn should I feed five chickens?
My cousin says one handful but that doesn’t seem much at all. I want to give them as much as possible without it making them fat. How much do you feed yours? They have my good size garden to wander round most of the day as excersize. Do you think they can have more than one handful?

  2. I have chickens of my own but way more than 5, We don’t feed them corn but you’d feed them about 3 hand fulls and if they don’t eat all the corn the first time reduce the amount that you put

  3. Hey, I think I might be of some help..

    1. How much do you feed yours?

I keep my Chicken’s bowl full (24hours). Cos, that’s how it is in the wild. Even if food is available in surplus Chickens never overfeed themselves.. So, I advice you to maintain a full bowl of water and food for yours too..

    2. Do you think they can have more than one handful?

They will have more than one handful only if they want to. So, you wont have to worry about them getting overfed..

And Yes, having a good size garden is great. Since you mentioned, I think you could spread out the corn all over the garden instead of giving it to them as a whole (in bowl’s).. The Chickens will surely love it..

Also feed them with whole grains now and then.. They will need much protein too.

Hope you got helped. Take care of the hens..

  5. My chickens would get layer pellets, as the majority of their diet, water and oyster shell 24/7 (I expect eggs). 24/7 because I don’t have to go to the coop and see what they need. The feed is in a large feeder bin in the coop (to stay dry) and the oyster shell is in a separate small bin feeder. Mine are free range and i throw them a handful of chicken scratch feed and wild bird seed mix every day. They come to my whistle as they know I have the seeds. They also love veggie and fruit scraps. Most breeds do not get fat on this diet but a corn diet will tend to put fat on them.
