Question by TinkerBell: How many times a day should i be feeding my 8 week old jack russell?
i paid $ 350 for a Pedigree Jack Russell puppy today and i was given the papers for him.
i asked what food he was being fed and the breeder said they ate what his kids dropped on the floor at meal times. what sort of food should he be on? and how often and how much should i be feeding him? i wormed him when i got him home at 10am EST and he just pooped out what looks like a huge pile of worms, with a little bit of poo in it.
he needs to be vaccinated but the breeder didnt tell me when, i know the puppy is registered with the Australian Kennel Club , but arent breeders meant to vaccinate and worm theit puppies before selling them?
I also havent thaught of any names for him yet , and would like some help with cute names for him..
i have baught him his own bed and bowls , ive tried feeding him chicken but he wont eat , i know hes hungry as when i eat at the table he runs around my legs crying and licking his lips, what can i do to stop him begging for food, and end up eating puppy food?

  1. I feed all that they will eat 4 times per day until they are 12 or 13 weeks old..This also helps with house-training, if you put the bowl away between meals, and take them outside directly after they have eaten.

By 12 weeks, they are well house-trained, and the feedings are gradually reduced to 3 per day until growth is reached, and then twice per day for life. To drop a feeding, just feed less and less for the mid-day meal, until it is just a biscuit or treat.
Get him a top quality puppy kibble at the pet supply shop, not the grocer’s. Meat should be the first ingredient. Moisten it with warm water and serve when it has softened. As he grows to look forward to his meals, reduce the moisture (unless he is losing his puppy teeth). until you are feeding it dry..Don’t allow him table food, and he will eat..Feed at same times daily, as routine is important to a dog.

And yes, it was poor breeding practices indeed! Your puppy is so lucky to have landed with you!

    I like the name Baxter.

  2. This breeder is totally irresponsible. Your pup should have been on a regular diet of puppy food. He is probably malnourished if all he has been getting is table scraps. You need to take your pup to the vet asap. Worms can kill a puppy, and your pup has a severe infestation. Yes, responsible breeders always give puppies their first set of shorts, worm them, and microchip them before letting them go to their new owners. I would also check on the validity of those registration papers to make sure they aren’t fake. People counterfeit all kinds of things in the dog world, and this person sounds like the kind of person who would rip you off. Get a good quality, all natural puppy food and feed twice a day, or for this poor pup, you might want to just leave some dry food out all the time. You might also try putting some cooked chicked and rice soup over his dry food for the time being to get him used to eating out of his bowl. Good luck with him at the vet.

  3. he is much too used to eating table scraps. what a disgusting owner!
    have you tried crating him?
you can put food in front of him, after 30 minutes if he hasnt eaten it, take it away. keep doing this every few hours so he knows that he should eat what is put in front of him, not whats on the table.
    good luck
i have a jack russell too, he is a handful

  4. yes for that price it should be vaccinated, usually it is wormed by the vet when it has its first vaccination…. it has to have three puppy vaccination shots, the two first injections are important, other wise it can get parvo and die, yes its pretty serious get it to a vet as soon as possible… puppies should be fed three times a day with plenty of water at all times… Its going to be hard since it hasnt had a proper diet of food? meaning what to feed it since its been eating the kids food?
MY puppy is fussy l buy a full chicken boil it with a cup of rice and let it cook til chicken is well done, wait until it cools then pull the chicken to pieces pulling out all the bones they love it, put it in a large container in the fridge and that should last a while, also they like puppy dry food chiken, beef, theres a few different varieties… anyway good luck

  5. You little man needs about 4 small meals a day. NOT from table scraps unless u want to train him 2 beg!!!! Please buy him a proper puppy food (labled as puppy food) until he is at least 6 months old – better yet, a year. They need all the minerals & vitamins these foods provide. Jacks are smart dogs and now is the time to decide what u want him to learn and how u can do it.
I have a Cetificate 2 in Animal Handling & Cert. in Animal Training.
Remember who is the trainer. The breeder u bought from sounds very irresponsible. Ur pup sounds like he was full off worms when u got him!!!!!

  6. try using puppy food but warm it in the microwave for a few second just to take the chill out of it, you should also feed him three to four times a a day until he is about 3months old. if he dosnt take to the puppy food maybe add a bit of rice. you need to worm him at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks of age then every month for 12 months. he proberly did have alot of worms but thats normal for puppies. the first name that came to mind was jasper. and he also needs his c3 vaccination as soon as he’s 6weeks old and then another one a month later. i hope this will help.

  7. I should think a name would be the last thing on your mind right now. This creep cannot be genuine – he is a backyard breeder posing as genuine and charging top dollar for a poor product. Get the poor creature to the vet for all the treatment he needs plus vaccinations, and give the resulting bill to the “breeder”. Tell him that if he doesn’t pay up, you will sue. Call your local council’s Trading Standards department and report him. Call the RSPCA and ask their inspector to look at this place. And be prepared to follow this up, otherwise this human excrement will carry on producing sick puppies and ripping buyers off.

  9. You should seriously think about reporting this “breeder”. Responsible breeders deworm and vaccinate their pups at the appropriate intervals and they DO NOT feed them table scraps! After pups are weened, they should be fed a diet of puppy food. This pup is possibly malnourished from not having proper food so far. You should get it to a vet immediately to have it dewormed and vaccinated. When it comes to feeding the puppy, it’s up to you to decide what type of food you think is appropriate. Personally, I fed my dogs Purina One Puppy when they were young. Whatever brand you choose, there should be a chart telling you how much food to feed a dog that weighs a certain amount. Split that amount into 3-4 feedings per day, depending on which is more convenient for you. As the puppy gets older, you can reduce that to twice per day. Hope this helps!
