I did research on goat farming and you can keep 10 goats on an acre, so 5 for 1/2 acre of field land, less if that 1/2 acre includes your yard and house.
A half acre is not very big. I suggest no more than 3 or 4 and it had better have real good grass to sustain that many animals. Yes, they will eat it down to nothing in real short order. Three will turn a half acre into dirt in about two months, plus or minus a few days.

I keep two in my bedroom. I have a friend who keeps 12 in his house, he keeps the bathtub full of water for them to drink.
Depends on the size of the goat and whether you land is multi level. I.e. do you have subteranian areas or a two story house? I think the average goat is about 2 feet wide by 4 feet long, so it is a simple matter of mathematics.
Okay, say two or three, at that you will still need to feed them grain, hay, and plenty of fresh water. Also they will need a lot of your time, love, and attention.
I have 8 nigerian dwarf does.. on a quarter of an acre. and about half of that is still grass. but i feed straight alfalfa, so my does are often eating hay rather than pasture.
But i have 5 nubians on about 3/4 an acre or so. and they keep it pretty grazed down. so i would say you could keep 4 safely.

We have a little less than 1/2 an acre for our goats. Once, after all the does kidded we had 9 and there was no grass whatsoever.
At the moment we have 5 and there plenty of grass for them to munch on. I’d say between 4-6 goats.
