Question by Evelyn: How many dairy goats should i get to supply milk and meat for a family of 5 for each year?
I want to get up a herd of dairy goats to use for my family’s meat and milk needs. Need to know how many does and bucks.

  2. One buck and one to three does I imagine would be fine. One word of note: bucks spray semen (not pee) on them during breeding season and they smell awful. One to three does can produce one to six (or more) kids each year, some you can sell, some you can eat, and some you can use to replace the does in your mini herd.

Also, dairy goats don’t have much meat on them, so I would suggest you cross your does with a Boer buck.

It would be helpful to know how many acres you have, what kind of shelter you’ll have available, etc. Contact local breeders in your area, browse around the internet, read books. Get all the information you can before acquiring goats.
