Question by Mary Ellen: How long does coccidia last in puppy being treated with Albon?
We got a puppy 2 weeks ago and she has had diarrhea since she came home. Breeder had her on Flagyl, but I had my vet test her stools and he has her on Albon now. Also feeding her chicken and rice. Dry food seems to cause diarrhea again. Concerned she isn’t getting enough nourishment from home cooked food. Greater Swiss Mountain Dog 13 weeks old female. Please help:(

  2. Albon should have cleared it up. I had to put my Lab pups on it for 5 days because I fed the birds in my backyard before I bred their dam. Birds carry cocci. They picked it up when they went out into the yard.
It sounds more like she has intestinal problems. Did you change her food from what the breeder was feeding? If you are concerned about her getting enough vitamins and minerals put her on a vitamin with enzymes like ProZyme Plus.and/or Benebac Plus. Both will help to re-establish the intestinal flora in her system. As always, check with your vet first.

  3. Always best to treat for a prolonged period, maybe 10 days, or treat for a week, go off for a few days and then treat again. If she was on Flagyl, does that mean she had giardia as well?
