I finally did it. I made my first hydroponic system. I did the easiest thing I could do which is just a wick system. I found hydroponic nutrients and perlite at Home Depot
Question by Christian N: How do you grow hydroponics in an inexpensive way?
I wanted to do this for my science fair project, but then I realized how expensive it was. I had to change my topic last minute, and I am real interested on what I started. It seems like fun. Any ideas?

A plastic tray can be obtained from a nursery for free since they throw out the flats that they receive with their shipments. For a science fair budget, you can leave out the recirculating pump and just pour the collection bucket back into the supply bucket after adding nutrients on a daily basis. Short bits of pumps can be collected from housing construction sites. Just be sure to ask the site manager and foreman before taking. That way it’s not stealing.
A little ingenuity and I’m sure you can have fresh veggies for under $ 20 capital cost.

Contrary to what reactorsite says, Growing Edge magazine has shown the legal use of hydroponics since 1989. On the GE web site there are many do-it-yourself plans to make your own setup economically. Also there is a lot of coverage of other schools and students who use hydro in their projects and class curriculums. Check it out:
