Hi, Yes i am indeed wanting to show a chicken or turkey at my 4-H show this year but the only problem is i do not live on a farm and i live in a neighborhood. Would i be better off owning a few ducks in my backyard? Because i Do have a fairly nice sized pond?? PLEASE HELP ME.

  1. You can get a couple of chickens if you want in your yard! Even if you have a pond, do you really feel like boating out in the middle to snatch up your prize winning duck every time you need to show it? Have you considered a rabbit? They are easy. You can also litter train a rabbit if your parents will let you keep it inside.

  2. i live in a neighborhood as well and my father has ten chickens weve had them for about 6 years. the only thing is there was problems with the state. some states have laws about chickens, like if its a rooster it has to be s certain amount of yards away from other peoples homes so if your neighbors have a problem with them they could report you. but other than that i dont see a problem. our chickens have a coop and during the day they wonder around the yard and theyre fine! good luck =)

  3. If you cannot legally own a chicken or turkey in your neighborhood, then you will have to try and do a different project. Also ducks are much dirtier than chickens or turkeys, and their waste smells very bad. Your neighbors are not going to like it one bit.

I would start by calling your Extension office to find out if you can do the project, they will be able to help you figure out if your city or town has ordinances which prohibit livestock. If so you may be able to do a rabbit project instead.

  4. Raise some Bantam Chickens in a small coup in your backyard, they’re small enough to raise in a neighborhood. Ducks and hens are quiet so you shouldn’t get any complaints from your neighbors, but roosters are loud, and drakes and roosters can be aggressive.

  5. I would try to first check out the city zoning laws. You would be surprised but many cities are fine with owning a few hens. Roosters are, however, often not an option.

I would recommend a few hens instead of ducks, they are incredibly messy! If you want help raising urban chickens there is lots available.

http://urbanchickens.org and http://home.centurytel.net/thecitychicken/index.html are both city chicken websites.

I was a 4-H poultry leader for years – you will love it!
