It was a lot of fun (and so fast!) to build these beds with Green City Growers [1]
Question by Aremisasling: How do I make a raised garden bed on a concrete slab?
I need to make a raised bed on a concrete slab, but since it’s an apartment complex, I can used a hay bed as the decomposing hay and trapped moisture will stain the slab. Essentially it has to be an open bottom, but how would I support it? Any ideas?
Give your answer to this question below!
Depending on the finished size, you can have it up on legs with a solid bottom. That would be more like a large raised window box but the same principle. Anything on the concrete will leave a stain, if not from the soil just being damp and out of sunlight will stain it.
If your set on an open bottom, lay some plastic or an old tarp down first, it will reduce the staining, then borrow or rent a pressure washer before you move to clean it.
I am in a wheel chair so I made a raised garden for ease of reach, but have since reverted back to the regular in ground garden. But my raised ones were on legs and worked fine.

Check out the book “Square Foot Gardening”. There is a wealth of information about raised beds on platforms and how to maximize your garden production in small spaces.

You can use Earthboxes (expensive) or make your own inexpensive Earthbox-type planter. Google for instructions and tips.
