We live on a small lake and have watched a mother mallard raise a family of five ducklings this summer. Today, one of the ducklings brought a fish into the yard and tried to eat it.

Question by Mrs.R: How do I identify a baby duck?
I rescued a very small/young wild baby duck who was washed over the falls and far away from its mother. How do I identify it’s type and how do I find local help in how to care for it until it is big enough to be released? I just want to do the right thing to help it survive—it is absolutely darling and sleeps when I hold it gently and warm it up!

  1. Ducklings can be hard to tell apart, but you might want to call a local wildlife rehabilitator to take it. If you decide to keep it you’ll need to provide it plenty of warmth, with either a hot water bottle or a heat lamp, as well as water and some duckling or chick mash that you can get at a feed store.

Ducks are pretty easy to raise. Poor baby.
