Question by fire_chic_911: How do I get my 4 month old to stop spitting up?
My son in 4 months old and has battled severe colic, so I finally switched him to goats milk, which has eliminated the colic, but he spits up really bad. Which makes him and everything around him smell really bad. I don’t know what to do HELP.

His little tummy might dislike the milk and that is why so much is still comming up. Or maybe he’s just a difficult child to fully burp? I’d suggest talking to your pediatrician in case its because of the milk. Have you tried the lactose-free types, or soy?

Babies are going to spit up regardless until they begin to walk. To help them out, make sure that you fully burp him after he eats. Also, don’t place him on his tummy or do any activity that will jostle his stomach right after he finishes eating. I’m happy for you that the colic is finally gone though!

Well i dont know for sure because i dont have a kid but I do babysitt a 4 month old and when he spits up a lot he isnt adapting very well to the heat. so put really cold water on his feet and put your hand in some cold water and put it on his head. and he stops. But maybe he is allergic to the goat milk. I dont know

usually when they spit up it’s b/c their body can’t take the food it’s given or it’s being given too much to eat…
i would try giving him just a couple ounces and then burping him and then feel his tummy and see how hard it is…even though he is older, he still may not be able to take in much yet…
if this persists, i would take him to the doc…
what i did so that when my daughter spit up, she wouldn’t smell so much…i would wipe her down (with a wet rag dunked in water and baby shampoo) everywhere that she got spit up on her and then dry her off and then put that lavender lotion on her…helped take the stink away…

One thing you can try is to mix up about 2 table spoons of rice cereal with water. If you give it to him after his bottle it should act kind of like a cork. It will help keep the milk down.
One of the reasons babies spit up is because the milk/formula is to rich for their little tummies. My son is 10months old and eating all kinds of table food so I took him off formula and put him on whole milk. He continued to spit up until I finally switched him to 2% milk. He hasn’t spit up since.
Another home remedy to relieve colic is to take a peppermint stick and swirl it in water. Peppermint helps relieve gas.

It is normal for a 4 month old baby to spit up. When it is really bad it is caused by reflux. Usually you should put them in a 90 degree angle. But if that doesn’t work, ask your doctor about it and how to prevent it.

You might want to talk to baby’s doctor about putting baby in a reflux medicine for a while. What might be happening is that the formula that he was previously having trouble with might have caused some inflamation. The inflamation makes him spit up which can make the inflamation worse leading to more spitting up. In some cases just going on reflux medicine for a month will let baby heal up enough to stip the spitting up.
You might want to check with baby’s doctor or a pediatric nutritionist to be sure that baby is getting everything that he needs from the goat milk. Goat milk normally doesn’t have the right amount of calories to help baby grow. I tihnk that most of the time when feeding a baby goat milk, rice syrup is added to give it a few more calories. You need to ask the doctor to find out exactly how much should be added.
Good luck. I hope he starts feeling better soon.

Try paediatric gaviscon but make sure you follow the instructions. You add a little bit of the powder to the formula milk and this helps a lot.

My son has colic and he also has acid reflux. We finally had to add some rice cereal to his formula and that has had a lot. He is 3 months and easts 7 ounces. I add 1-2 tablespoons of cereal to his bottle. That is what my doctor recomended.
