  1. I usually look in grit magazine, well they don’t have any with coops this month, have a regular column on chickens just wanted to give them a blurb since they wrote an article this month about my problems with deer. But most of the time I see how to build different kinds of chicken coops in there. Below is a link to them with a red hen setting on her nest:)

  2. Will treat this as a serious question. The purpose of a chicken coop is to protect the chickens from predators and provide a place for them to lay eggs. Chickens like to roost at night in elevated positions. The coop needs to be big enough for you to get into. Have a shelf about 4 feet about ground level with spaces / boxes with hay for the chickens to lay the eggs in. Have more that 3 boxes for you may want to have more chickens sometime. – – -Your best bet is to go to local library and check out a book on chicken raising. It should have directions for a proper coop. Or try to buy the book off ebay. Good Luck !

  3. For 3 hens your chicken coop won’t have to be very large unless you are planning on more chickens. You could have an old shed or barn and even a good lean too building for shelter from the cold and weather conditions. You need to supply a nice water holder and easy to keep the water clean. Your shed should have a good floor or cemented area and quite a lot of straw covering it. Make some chicken hutches for the chickens to lay eggs. Have it hooked up for electricity and a light bulb. have a good door on the shed and have an opening or not. The more openings you have the more pests you will have to get your chickens. It’s nice to have an screened small window for ventilation mostly used during summer months. If you have an area that they can be outside make sure you fence and secure it so no pests can enter it. You will have to dig into the soil to block rodents and other wild animals sneaking under or over to grab them a fast meal. Sometimes double chicken wire or a better heavy type near the bottom fencing. It is a lot of money to spend for 3 chickens. We raised a lot of chickens and one year a weasel got into them so it is important to re in-force the fencing and protection. You should have more chickens to out weigh the cost of building a coop. You need to keep them warm and not suffer the cold so your building should be totally covered. I am not sure if I helped you or not but best of luck for you and 3 hens

  5. You could look at sites for woodwork plans?
They tend to have plans for chicken coops, although if you haven’t got any woodworking experience it might be a bit useless!
