Question by Brokn: How close to my house foundation can I safely place a raised garden bed?
Our building inspector said the ground around our home needs to slope away from the house so that we don’t get water in the basement or problems but can we place a raised bed against the house? Its a brick house if thats a consideration with a concrete foundation/basement.

If we place the rasied bed 4 – 6 feet away from the foundation, won’t that make the yard area slope toward the foundation?
If I put the raised bed next to the foundation, am I not causing the slope to go towards the house?

  1. We had a huge Sycamore tree about 3 feet away from our foundation and the water did come right in when it rained, as it sloped right into the house. If you make sure you slope it away and have adequate drainage you should be good.

  2. A raised bed that is 4-6 feet away from the house COULD dam up water behind it if there is nowhere for the water to drain to.

I really wouldn’t recommend a raised bed. It’s better to build up the soil around the house to slope away from the foundation. You could possibly put a raised bed ON TOP OF that, but putting the bed in alone isn’t going to fix your drainage problem.
