Gillian is what industry calls a broiler, a type of chicken bred for consumption.
Gillian arrived with 100 other birds (we call them peepers) in 2005 after the broiler shed they were living in in MIssissippi was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. From the 100, only 8 are still alive.
In the 1st year, 50 died – they are bred to produce so much weight that their hearts and leg joints cannot support them. Most die from heart attacks or leg/hip fractures. It’s a tragic result of selecting large animals who can be killed at the young age of 6 weeks.
