You are right, chickens are great. They keep the bugs down and produce great manure. They also can be very friendly.
You have everything you need for gardening; good soil, access to cow and chicken manure and bedding from the barn. I used to have horses, a cow and chickens and had the same benefits. I know what you mean about the chickens being entertaining. I was hoping that when we moved to the mountains we’d be able to have some, however there home owner’s association won’t let us do it. 3 acres yet we can have a chicken. Unreal.
thanks for the tip we started using a tablet you flush down the toilet once a mounth that the first time its been pumped in 13 years the worst part is i dug it up in the summer to check it and i checked the wrong side of the tank never had the problem till there was 6″ of frost
I agree about the attempt to go completely self sufficient – you really need to have the total set up for this from fork to plate. Nice cows – Hereford is a very popular breed in the UK. You should think about getting an organic septic tank – we have one (French make) where you just put powder into the system once a month and it breaks down all the waste …. saves on a lot of visits to pump it out as we only do this once a year.
