Home Composting

Composting is one of the important function in the nature which replenishes the soil with essential elements to support life on earth. Composting is a simple but complicated process. People have aversion for composting just because of lack of understanding. We make waste and throw it outside just because we are less imaginative, less creative and do not bother about others. In my previous video on landfill you can see the plight of a village which is being dumped with waste from a city. Dont we feel ashamed of it? Dont feel inhumane? Let us do composting at home / work. It is simple, joyful and creative. It is a big step towards building a zero waste society. I made this video to encourage people who are living in cities and always complain about lack of space for doing something. We have to find space in our mind. Then it can work even in a pot! Unleash your creativity and enthusiasm to contribute to save our Planet!

  2. Dear friend, Aerobic composting do not bother taking in citrus peels since it can be digested by bacteria. Normally exotic speicies of earth worms (especially the african species) are used in India for wormi composting since they are voracious eaters.

The naturally occuring worms can digest the waste but it may be little slow.

In aerobic composting in temperate regions, Black Soldier Fly breeds in the waste and the maggots of it also speeds up composting process.

  3. I understand that citrus peels (or other very acidic substances) can hurt worms in vermi-composting and should therefore be excluded.

Is it safe then to use citrus peels in regular compost bins? My confusion is that I had always thought that regular compost bins use worms too, ie worms that come naturally rather than worms that you introduce.

  7. It is slightly different. Pot composting is aerobic composting and pipe composting is not fully aerobic. It also involves anaerobic process which is bit risky in terms of odour and stinking.

  13. Dear friend,

TIP: Compost increases the quality of soil which in turn increases productivity. But do you know that composting increases the capacity of soil to absorb Carbon and transfer it to plants. organic farming is 25% more efficient than modern agriculture in absorbing carbon to fight climate change. “Soil is the Solution” is the new slogan.

  14. Dear friend,
Earthen pots are porous and no need to make holes for aeration. I am not sure about the temperate region, since it work well in tropical climate. In temperate region you may have to introduce some bacteria. (please do not get discouraged, spoiled milk, fermented food / fruits will be enough to introduce bacteria. If you can get some cow dung, it is wonderful) Keep in touch for any other clarification. Thanks for your interest, patience and persistence.

  15. Dear friend,
Normally it doesn’t emit intolerable or significant smell if it have good aeration / ventilation. I have these pots next to my kitchen door and never had problems.
