Home canning Ball Jar Canning Lids – not sealing NEW BOX
This season, I first noticed a problem with the new Ball jar lids (silver) after 4 jars out of 4 batches didn’t seal. After opening new boxes, and comparing things to the older gold colored seals, i noticed that the “pop” the lid usually makes, is barely there, or doesn’t exist!! This is compromising our food safety. Ball Jar no longer manufactures canning supplies. Jarden Home Products distributes under the Ball name. Where are these made? There’s a fuzzy Made in the USA on the front, but i’m suspect. Maybe the box was made in the USA.. The older boxes with gold lids hada red white and blue big flag with made in the USA. I am going to be VERY cautious with this product if i use it at all. Home preserving requires skill, knowledge to safely produce food for us.

I have talked to many home canners the past 2 years and they are “coming to” after I ask how many don’t seal in a session? Then the light bulb goes on. I scored on some old new stock of Kerr lids and have been canning successfully this year – I don’t know what i’ll do when that stash is gone. From reading BlizmcD’s post, looks like nothing has been changed.

I am also having trouble with lids sealing this year. I’ve been canning for over 20 years and have never had lids not seal like I am seeing this year. I’ve been averaging about three not sealing per box. I am very concerned that what did seal will lose the seal before I open the jars. Canning is a lot of effort and expense. I can hundreds of jars each year and depend on that food throughout the winter. If the lids not sealing continues, I may freeze instead of can.

@Staymewithflagons but an hour later I still states the metal taste in my mouth! I will not use these lids again. They are very pretty…but as you all would agree…not worth ruining hard earned beautiful foods.

@Staymewithflagons But I used some little jars from Ball that are only about a third of a pint I guess…thought it would be nice as we do not use alot at once at our house. But after letting them sit over night I opened one to try the cooled finished results…delicioius…except…after a few minutes I could taste the lid metal. They are a silver gray colored lid…and I suspect nickle in them. Perhaps others will not taste it…I have more sensitive taste and smell than many people…

I have not canned in years…but a friend had some old fashioned backyard peaches to use…and as you know they don’t keep long! So I agreed to make preserves and share the results in order to show my daughter who is interested. The little old fashioned peaches were not marvelous looking…so I expected the taste to be great! And was right…the preserves taste amazing…like old fashioned peach pie.

Thank you! I am furious with Ball over this! Sad part is – Kerr is part of the same company! Their quality will be going down in a matter of time too.
To give an example of how much experience I have, Over the last 3 years, I have canned an average of 300 jars. This is the first year I have had such trouble – and it’s because I didn’t have to buy any lids since early spring of 2010. This is horrid.

Gabri, you’re right about the popper . The trouble I had is 5 jars out of 21 DID NOT seal, and i couldn’t figure out why, until i realized that the new ball jar lids didn’t make the same noise, they don’t feel the same. Jarden is messing wtih our freedom to put up our own food. I’m very concerned and just wanted to show what i experienced.

I dont think the Ball company make them in Muncie anymore. I think they are made in Either China or Mexico. The quality has really gone down the crapper.

Isn’t the point of the popper to show you that the lid has sealed / there’s a vacuum after production. Does it say that there should be a pop straight out of the box?
