Question by yahoomiss: Henna artists, do you get a really sore thumb or hand after doing loads of people’s henna tattoos?
I’ve been doing henna tattoos at college to raise money for charity for 3 days now and my thumb and hand is killinggg! It’s so sore… Is there something I’m doing wrong or any relief to help my sore hand?

  1. Depends on what you’re using to apply the henna. Rolled cones are great for control, but are somewhat rigid. Carrot bags are floppier and give flat lines instead of round, but are easier to squeeze. You should strive for a cone or bag to be of a length and thickness that fits in the palm of your hand, so you can use pressure with your entire hand, and just use your fingers and thumb for control. Think turkey baster instead of writing tool, holding it like a pen while pressing hard can cause cramps.

I prefer rubber bands to keep the bag or cone closed. It’s easier to push down as needed and keep the henna under pressure, so you don’t squeeze as hard. If you use tape to seal and tighten the cone, then leave a tab of tape that you can undo, roll the cone tighter, and then reapply. Too much tape makes it stiff.

Bottles and syringes are a pain in my opinion, but keeping them fuller, and buying softer bottles, will ease the hand cramps. Take breaks as you need, massage your hands, and drink lots of water.
