Health Ranger: ‘FDA fights organic farmers’

For the past several years organic foods have received an increase of attention due to the lack of pesticides and not being genetically altered. Many people are demanding that their food be untouched. Recently a SWAT team arrested farmers for selling raw milk to customers. Is it a crime to drink raw milk or does the government feel left out? Mike Adams, health ranger, first broke the story any tells us why the FDA doesn’t approve of this. Follow Lauren on Twitter: twitter.com

I think in fact some laws are designed to protect the citizens, and some to protect their freedoms. Clearly drink driving laws for example curtail the freedom of the citizenry but increase their safety. I see this safe milk as that sort of issue. I cannot know that every farmer is honest and conscientious in his treatment of his product, but laws mean he is more likely to avoid mistakes and corruption.

But unfortunately this is not a country where our laws and system is designed to protect the citizenry, but rather their freedoms. We could forbid all but public transportation by bus and eliminate most driving deaths, we could force everyone to eat a diet and follow an exercise regimen that promotes the best health, but we do not. People have to be allowed to choose what is best for themselves, or else their safe and controlled lives are not worth living. My 2cents.

I don’t disagree that it is possible to consume raw milk without bad consequences… however… when something does go wrong it will go badly wrong and could potentially require the CDC to intervene if it gets out of hand. We are talking epidemics and many dead people. It is simply easier for everyone if milk is pasteurised and homogenised. I think the law may be a little scattergun on this issue, but frankly I’m not sure our prohibition on murder isn’t also a little scattergun.

Actually, they are not. Raw milk and other products need to be handled correctly (i.e. don’t milk the cow with dirty hands or put the apple juice into fouled containers) but otherwise they are perfectly safe to ingest if a person wishes to. Let people sue if they get sick, or let the producer put a warning label up to inform he consumer, but the government has no business forbidding the consumption or sale of foodstuffs.

Well, that comment is besides the point. It doesn’t alter the fact that whatever else her been done by the FDA, the fact is that pasteurization and homogenization are completely necessary for stopping diseases. I favor strong regulation of food, specifically because it can halt the worst excesses of corporations and small businesses alike by providing strong legal remedies and industry monitoring. Consumers should favor that; it works, as legal history will show.

  10. @formless777 That’s not the case at all. The FDA is currently controlled by huge corporations, such as Cargill & Monsanto. Those corporations are doing everything they possibly can to prevent organic & natural foods & beverages from being available on the market so that the only choice people will have is to buy & consume foods made by those corporations. Unfortunately there’s a lot of foods on the market that are all made from GMO’s. Monsanto is the corporation that invented GMO’s.

I think the deal is that the FDA has a legally mandated duty to stop people consuming things that have been determined to be unsafe. Hundreds of thousands of years ago they didn’t have and FDA and people had an average life expectancy of 30 years because they ate things that made them sick, and they died. For what is’t worth, no legal waiver negates your right to sue; they’re of no legal worth, and may be evidence of malfeasance on behalf of the producer.

  12. @formless777 I am saying that I have the right to choose that if I want it. I don’t need big gov. telling me what I can or cannot eat. It’s not their job to censer what I consume. It’s not like they are selling this at walmart and Kroger. It’s in specialty shops. And you have to sign a waiver stating you understand that this is not a FDA approved product.

The bottom line is the FDA was not around for hundreds and thousands of years and man still made it. Dont need big brother in my business.

  13. The economy must grow gracefully, like a tree. A tree follows the golden ratio as it grows horizontally and vertically towards the sun.
The American economy must balance horizontal (tradition) with vertical (new growth).
For example, traditional small businesses must be maintained as new industries surface.
To suppress new growth (ultra conservative) is to create a bonsai stunted economy. To dump tradition in favor of the new (ultra liberal) creates a top-heavy digger pine economy that topples.

So you’re saying that, based on your experience alone, that tuberculosis doesn’t sit in the soil and enter cattle through the grass they eat and then enter the milk they produce ? You’re suggesting, based on the fact that you had a healthy childhood, that this will always be the case for everyone, regardless of the conditions being different where they live to where you grew up. Rethink this, you were lucky, not wise.

  19. @formless777 That is bullshit. I grew up on farm raised beef/pork/chicken. Unlike many other’s I shit you not. I actually watch some of the animals get killed and prepped for freezing. My dad milked the cow every morning and we sold fresh eggs and milk to our neibors. Nobody ever got ill from it. In fact while other kids we sick with colds myself and the kids that ate the raw foods were fine.

  24. I am from Greece, and already been informed about ‘CODEX ALIMENTARIUS’. Which may going to be applied in my Country relatively soon. Greece has hundreds of herbs and natural products that may ‘marked’ as ‘illegal’ & ‘dangerous’!!! After thousands of years that they are being used! Next think we know, Goverments All over the word will only allow ‘genetically altered’! Actually, EVERYTHING not being ‘processed’, ‘packed’, or ‘verified’ by a large CORPORATION. will be illegal !!!!!
