@SleestaksRule I think the point is to grow plumper & more spherical tomatoes… Also I heard it’s to do with gravity. In the old system, the plant would have to make the nutrients travel up its stems and into the fruits, now it has a little help from gravity.
@TeamStephenson Over-all I wasn’t impressed. They seemed to do slightly worse than the same plants I grew the right way up. I probably won’t be growing them this way again but it made for an interesting experiment.
How much did it cost you to build all that you should also colect some of that water it might save you some money i collect rain water i would like to have a little plave of my own like that
Is there anything you can’t do! You are amazing! One thing about the tomatoes’ leaves, I don’t think they like to get wet, so you might get some mildew – but that happens anyway with tomatoes. Also, I wonder is a support of some kind could be “attached” to the bottom to help hold them up – so they don’t get too heavy and break. Just thinking – anxious to see how it turns out!

I would of used a smaller hole and pushed the roots through instead and then added a thin layer of gravel before adding the compost mix.
Hey Rick, just thought I’d mention I planted my Chilli seeds today (little bit late but should be okay). Got 5 varieties hopefully, Anaheim, Hungarian Hot Wax, Jalapeno, Tabasco and Demon Red. You should grow some chillies too!
@SleestaksRule There is mixed feedback concerning this type of growing. Some say that they get better yields, others report a poorer result. I figured there was only one way to find out…
Good for you for not wasting $10. One thing I did different is slit a couple coffee filters to the center and cut out a small hole for the stem. I placed those over the hole and around the stem before filling the bucket. It seemed to help keep the soil from eroding out. I like your idea of securing them to the post.
I suspect the plants shown on the box of the upside planter were grown right side up then allowed to hang for the advertising photos. Just my opinion.

In my experience the plants will try to right them selves at first then will settle and start to grow down. It looks odd because the leaves will still face upward toward the sun. The problem I ran into is a particularly bad storm twisted and cracked the stems. They survived but never fully recovered. Their upright and caged siblings were only lightly damaged. I imagine without the cages the storm may have been just as destructive or worse on them.

@GuildF40 The video I was shooting was in reference to his book that he wrote on specific topic. Its a good to the point kind of book which can be read in one session. Then the tape quality was so bad. Well, its what I need for the warranty to show those people how bad this stuff can really get for the technology we have today. I am thinking they gave me a re-fixed model over a week ago on my warranty. I spent $20 to keep the warranty. If they ask it again, i wont be happy

Bet nextdoor keeps peering out the window. “Whats he up to now George. HE’s hang buckets up with plants sticking out the bottom.” It really is a sitcom, in the making! Like a modern day George and Mildred .

Why not put some plants under the buckets that way you’d not waste the water or nutrients.

Is there a benefit to growing this way? I never tried it but wouldn’t you get more output planting the other way around?
