Growing Food In a Polytunnel In this video on Growing Food in Polytunnels Tommy B of Killarney Garden Centre shows you how to use ‘Companion Planting’ to plant crops in a Polytunnel that benefit from growing side by side. For example: if you are growing food in a Polytunnel such as Carrots the ideal companion for this is to grow Onions beside them. Carrot Root Fly: By growing Onions beside your Carrot in the Polytunnel, the onions will keep the Carrot Root fly away from your crop. Carrot Root Fly is a very nasty pest. The soft àtches you get on Carrots is a result of Carrot Root fly. What kind of soil do you need to grow Carrots: Carrots and Onions love ‘light’ soil. To condition the soil use some horticultural sand a light layer of organic compost and you are ready to grow your own food in a polytunnel. How To Set Onions: Onions like to be set about 10 inches apart, make sure you let the tips protrude slightly above the soil. How To Set Carrot Seeds: When you are planting Carrots, you can set them in a line about 10 inches from the Onions. Make a little drill in the soil and using your thumb and index finger lightly sow the seeds into the little drill, just like Tommy B is doing on the video. As the Carrots grow you will need to thin them out a little. You can use them as salad carrots and this will make space for the others to mature into large carrots.
