You have got your goat farm running, and you think this is now the perfect time to get the animals ready for market. But the question is: how do you do that? In turn, this question leads to more questions. Do you just put up a “goat for sale” sign on your farm gate and hope that customers would come flocking in? Do you sell the animals to just about anyone who comes knocking on your door? How exactly would you price your goats? Here are some basic tips you might want to use when you finally want to put your livestock up for sale.
1. Separate your does from the rest of the flock. In order to make sure that your farm continues producing quality meat, milk, fiber or pets, you have to keep some of the potential breeding female goats (and maybe a couple of bucks too) separate from the other goats for sale. The former would become invaluable to you later on, especially if you have proven these animals to be the best producers of the products you want to sell.
2. Establish communications with the local farmers and other goat breeders in your locale. If you have to join regional livestock organizations, cooperatives or clubs, then do so. These are the people who can teach you how to put prices on the goat products you want to sell. Depending on the supply-and-demand scheme, these people will inform you the competitive prices of goat meat, goat milk (and other milk based products,) mohair (and other goat fibers,) and pet goat for sale.
But more importantly, such groups will also introduce you to other potentially profitable markets that might buy your produce at better prices. After all, putting up a goat for sale business is not simply about selling livestock. It’s about making enough profit from your business venture as well. Some of these organization, cooperatives or clubs regularly hold conventions and seminars for those who want to learn more about this kind of trade. These would also give a huge advantage to those who want to expand their list of business contacts.
3. You can also market your goats through local livestock auctions. Try to see if there are any auctions happening in your area either online or through the local papers. Try to enlist your farm’s name in the auction roster. Here, you would be selling wholesale to bidders, and usually the exchange of funds happens very quickly.
