Germinating Tomatoes from seed Sprouting Planting Tomato seeds Peppers under lights

My little indoor cabinet germination station for germinating Tomato and Pepper seeds. 32 watt compact fluorescent Grow Lights. Roma Brandywine Lady Bug Cherry tomatoes brandy wine I got the best results from the HydroFarm Germination Station with heat mat using regular compost from the outdoor garden. The seeds i started in Jiffy Pots took 2 weeks to sprout compared to 3-4 days with the HydroFarm. Also i had bad luck transplanting cucumbers with over half dieing. Next year i will either direct sow in the garden or initially start them in larger pots.

  4. Hi,

I have my seedlings ready to be transplanted. What are the ratios of soil, and fertilizer did you use for those cups, where you transplanted the seedlings?

  7. things to try: Make sure they r getting good light exposure. Give them a small dose of fertilizer. At 3-4 inches they r ready to be transplanted into a bigger container like a cup or pot, they can get stunted and root bound if kept in a small germination cell tray. I also put them outside for an hour or more on warm sunny days.

  11. hi, my soil mix is 90% compost – 5% perlite – 5% vermiculite. i water every couple days, i let the soil dry out a little between waterings. I fertilize with 1/2 tablespoon of fish emulsion in a gallon of water, first feed during the second week and again during the third week. the lights are on from 7am to 11pm. hope that answers your questions, thanks!

  15. You could also build one. Get a sheet of that cheap particle board stuff and some pine boards. Paint it really well to prevent water damage and you’re good-to-go!

  17. I’ve had great success with the Jiffy Greenhouse, like the one you have in the cabinet. I started rutgers, brandy boys, porterhouse beefsteak, and am waiting on the pink brandywines. I keep my actual greenhouse at 70degrees and I don’t use heatmats (although, they are not a bad idea at all and do greatly help in germination).

  20. about 17 hrs on, 7 hrs off. i manually turn the lights off before bedtime and on in the morning. I could use an electric timer but i like checking on the plants so havent installed one yet. the heatpad under the tray always stays on to keep the roots warm.

  25. thanks! yes i used garden soil straight from my outside beds. I fed them a few times with half strength fish emulsion fertilizer (1/2 tbsp per gal). The first feeding was around 2 weeks and then once more during the 3rd week.
