John from www.growingyourgreens.com goes on a impromptu field trip to a Brewery to share with you three resources you can probably acquire at no cost that will allow you to grow more food at home. After watching this episode, you will learn what these resources are and how they can help you as gardener.
hey John, what nutrients do the spent grains give you? or are they just good for humus building? And, have you used an old futon for your composting or lasagna bed making yet? fantastic nitrogen source in the fibres. 🙂

Cool! I’m calling the local brewery and ask them if I can have the sacks. I think you could grow potatoes in them especially if you use another black bag over them. Beware of the trash police! hahahaha

I have been assured that when composting any gmo organics are broken down to their basic components and are not a factor. Makes sense to me. I do not have research to prove this, however.

Depending on the brewery, especially where fruit puree is used or syrup, you can get some 4 or 5 gallon buckets.

John, great video, again! Serious question. Can we be sure the grains are NON GMO?? That concerns me. Thanks.

No, we don’t have Starbucks here, and stores like that do not get their coffee in burlap. I wasat the factory, where burlap sacks of whole beas get grinded down and put in mylar bags for selling.
I just need some ideas on what else kind of businesses that uses uncontaminated burlap sacks.

John, dumpster diving isn’t a bad idea especially if you live near a florist or a garden center. They dump many roses from a florist that can be used for cuttings. Also, garden centers throw out plants that no longer sell. It’s amazing what you can find in dumpsters. I found a couple of plastic lawn chairs. Hey, free garden furniture. LOL

If that Starbucks told you no, just go to the Starbucks accross the street. Doesn’t hurt to keep trying.

Careful, many breweries sell their spent grain as animal feed. Just because it’s in a bin out back doesn’t necessarily mean its worthless. It would be a good idea to check with the brewery before raiding their spent grains
