right now I am trying to figure out how to feed it and not have a constant cold because I have asthma! I have worn a dust mask and that helps some but I want to start all 35 goats, 3 horses, 17dogs,6cats on it. Do you think it really controls the parasites? My bucks have been on the longest and they are eating a lot better. What does everyone reccomend for parasite control. The chemical wormers just don’t work well especially in the dairy goats. Has anyone used it with guinea pigs,rats etc and how? thanks so much I really want to learn all I can about DE! MERRY CHRISTMAS! KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS!!! WHO’S BIRTHDAY IS IT ANYWAY! GOD BLESS ONE AND ALL!!!!
DE=Diatomaceous Earth

  1. I never used DE, and was unaware that you can feed it to animals. I would suggest discussing this with your vet.

    Here are some websites I found that may answer some of your questions…or raise even more. As I said, your vet may be the best source of reliable info.

  2. Most importantly if you are feeding DE make absolutely sure you are using food grade DE. Not all DE is safe for feeding. DE can help with parasites, but it is NOT a replacement for a proper worming program. You may be able to get by worming less often if you are using DE, but certainly you will still have to worm them regularly. If the chemical wormer you have been using isn’t working for you, you most likely just need to switch to a different kind. Some worms have become resistant to commonly used wormers in some areas. Ask your vet what wormers are best for your area. My vet recommends Valbazen in my area (can’t be used on does in the first 45 days of pregnancy). We have also used Ivomec with acceptable results. Ivomec is safe throughout all stages of pregnancy and has the added benefit of killing the external parasites such as lice and mites (although DE sprinkled on the skin can help with external parasites also), the drawback is that it doesn’t work for tapeworms.

    The best thing to do is to have random fecal samples tested occasionally and take your vet’s advice on wormers. The fecal samples will prevent unnecessary wormings and is generally pretty inexpensive.
