Question by Weeping Willow: Dear organic gardeners and hippies?
A message to you all…
“As for organic food, maybe we need an end to it. All you bong-beating hippies who think organic food is so great haven’t even bothered to look into the toll it takes on the environment. Organic food is the biggest scam in the history of agriculture, and you’ve all bought it (literally) hook, line, and sinker.
Think organic uses no chemicals, or safe chemicals? Wrong. Think organic doesn’t destroy habitats? Double wrong; it requires on average 2.5 times more acres than traditional farming, and that means more ecosystems destroyed. Think organic is healthier for you? Super wrong; not only have NO double-blind studies proven organic foods to have more nutrients than non-organic, but the farming methods tend to make it more dangerous to the consumer. Remember that horrible E. coli outbreak two years ago that killed something like 18 people? That was from organic spinach. Think organic supports small business? HAHA! So totally wrong. Most organic food at the grocery story is from farms owned by the big agribusiness conglomerates. They’ve realized that you suckers are so scared of everything that you’ll pay six times more for a carrot that’s been grown with more habitat loss and no nutritive benefit. You organic-eaters are lining the pockets of marketing and corporate fat cats and doing it with a big soy-eating grin on your faces.
Stop being afraid of science. Gain a little healthy skepticism and LEARN about issues before you decide to glom onto them. And stop believing everything the crazy hippies tell you.”
OWNED.
What do you think? Answer below!
umm, ok this is not a question, but rather a rant. You give info but ask for nothing.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not organic and refuse to pay extra for what amounts to a feel-good measure for consumers. However I do believe in freedom of choice and if people are willing to pay the extra for something raised a certain way they should be allowed to. Yes it takes more land as well as labor and fuel, but the higher pay price does offset this otherwise people wouldn’t grow it as much as they do. Yes a lot is produced by the big guys but I’ve also seen cases where it’s helped little guys survive without going into the massive debt involved in an expansion that they would likely need otherwise.
As a conventional producer, I am fully aware that this segment of the population will not likely be buying my products. However I do realize that although it’s a different market that I am not involved in it is still sales for the industry. For example I do dairy, those who insist on paying the extra for the organic milk are still helping the industry overall, and also realize that if they get a taste for the products during times when things are a bit tight to afford the premium if they still want their milk, cheese, etc they will be more likely to buy the conventional products that I sell versus a totally different alternative.

I am not afraid of science, but perhaps you are. Lots of statements (rants) thrown about but you provided no scientific references.

I am not afraid of science nor is the Organic food and farming crowd as we have science on our side and that science says Organic foods can and will feed the world.

Whatever you’re eating, I want to avoid it. That much anger and judgement and absolutely crappy data, clearly you do not eat well and your cognitive functions are suffering.
Instead of spewing this out, try an organic diet for 6 months with some yoga and meditation, and discover a new you with a new perspective on the world. Who knows, you could become just Willow without the weeping.
