We are growing fresh water redclaw crayfish or yabbies in the rafts of an aquaponic system. Makes for a great additional product.

any risks of the crayfish puncturing your lining?
Hi Nora. I reckon about 10 if you put mountains of hides in there. The redclaw will play a little nicer with each other. Perhaps build a solids filter out of your drum and just fill it with 2inch pvc pipe cut up into 3 or 4 inch lengths. That will work as a solids trap and the critters will love hanging around in there.
In a sense yes. If you are feeding them commercial feed, the phosphorous will still be locked up in their poo but when they eat that it will free some up.

Thanks, good to know for sure 🙂 I have some shrimps(cherry shrimp), do you know if they do the same job? I do feed them pellets too, but i see they are munching on that other stuff too..
Yes they do breed readily Badwolf. In the small quanitities you can grow in floating rafts, with the bright colors, they fetch about $5 each in the aquarium trade. You would not produce enough for commercial human consumption in that set up. But the females will produce up to 200 young twice a year.

Hi Paul, enjoyed your video. How many of these buggers can I comfortably put in a 55 gallon drum, with their hide outs of course? Thanks

If they are feeding on the fish wastes, then yes. That is where the phosphorus is locked up in.

Is it true that the redclaws gives you more phosphorus to your AP system? Believe iv’e read that somewhere..

Yabbies, I love it. Will they breed in those conditions? How’s the market for those?

Hi Richard,
There is 4600 litres of aquaculture attached to it growing perch. Yes there is aeration in the raft.

Hello,
I love it! Are the redclaw the only source of nutrient? is there no extra airation under the floating rafts?
