I planted the following cover crop mix:
40% Bell Beans, 20% Magnus or BioMaster Winter Peas, 15% Lana Vetch, 15% Purple Vetch,10% Cayuse Oats.
Question by renae: cover crops for horse pasture?
what’s a good winter/fall cover crop for horse pastures? i’m looking for something i can just spread and let grow. I’m not looking to harvest, i just need something for my horses to eat. I live in the southeast and need something that grows well in a mild winter. I’m planning on planting rye and crimson clover, but need something for this fall and the rest of winter. Thanks!
What do you think? Answer below!
Hi try lucern hay or maze or if you have a produce store just give them a call and ask them what they would recommend for your area.. All the best.

You don’t say where you are so I recommend calling your County Agent. Look in the phone book under the govt. section for the USDA office nearest you.
Alfalfa is not a good choice for horses in some parts of the country because of blister beetles.
If you really have mild Winter, Rye should grow and clover may not go dormant.

Another good source is your veterinarian. They are familiar with nutritional requirements.
