Question by : Could a hydroponics system save you money?
Could a hydroponics system save you time and money compared to a traditional outdoor soil system? Also, which would have the best yeilds?
What do you think? Answer below!
If water was very expensive and the soil poor, it could save money. I just built an ebb and flow system and put some of tomatoes in very good soil but after a month the hydroponics plants are probably 3 times as large and they don’t get as much sunlight. It would normally be more expensive to use hydroponics unless the increased yield makes up for the difference. There is a bit of a learning curve on setting the pH right and suitable fertilizers are more expensive and rather hard to find.
This one didn’t cost me too much since I used mostly equipment at hand. It probably cost me about 70 bucks for all the parts I didn’t already have.

If you consider time as money, it definitely does, you have no weeding
Also you can built it outside, and use the sun, so you wont need lights
You will use less water, because you don’t lose that much to evaporation.
You may have less pest problems the water is in a reservoir
and critters cant get in to try to drink, and if you have critter problems, fence it in.
My opinion is yes they do save money.
and by the way, there is some very inexpensive nutrient(powder)
that will take most veg’s all the way, also you can make some from Miracle Grow, Epson salts and calcium nitrate, there are alternatives on building them verses buying a system
I do not buy any more systems, once you understand the principles of hydroponics.
I go to home depot, Petsmart and I can build almost any type from there for a fraction of the price the store charges for systems. And Hydro has the best yields, surf the internet for the subject
